Explore the images stock website. Before you take pictures for stock photography, check out the website first. Find out how much it would be willing to pay for your pictures and which pictures are in high demand. Watch out for keywords and file names that were used for the pictures. Step 2

Use the right equipment. Invest on good equipment. A point and shoot digital camera will work just as fine as digital single lens reflex (DLSR) cameras. However, opt for one that has high pixel capacity so that your work will be at par with the ones taken on DLSRs. The only advantage a DLSR has over a standard point and shoot is its optical zoom capacity.

Keep it simple. Most of the pictures that sell well in an images stock website are those that represent an idea or a common term. Like for example, “glamour” can be represented by lips with blood red lipstick or “wealth” can be depicted with currency symbols or a chest full of money. The picture must be versatile enough that it can be used for various purposes.

Have a distinct style. Artsy photos might not sell well in any images stock website. However, just because it is not fashionable does not mean you cannot put your stamp on it. Taken from different angles or a variety of lighting, a subject can be portrayed in different ways.

Manipulate editing software. Aside from good equipment, it also pays to know some kind of software what you can use to make your photographs out of the ordinary. You can crop backgrounds, put watermarks, change its hues and the likes with standard photography editing software.

Step 6

Once you have done all these steps, it is time to take photos. About ten will do for your initial portfolio. The images stock website willbe able to gauge your style through these. Once approved, you can start adding more photos under your account. You earn money through royalties when someone buys your photos on the site. Sometimes, you might be commissioned to take photos of certain subjects or create original memes.
