How To Find Retailer Jobs

Jobs in the retail industry are great for young students and anyone who needs additional income. They include jobs selling fast food, clothes and even car parts. There really are a lot of choices whenever it comes to being a retailer so it should not be difficult to find a position that you are comfortable with. Once you prove that you are an expert at the work that you do, it is possible to move up and become a manager. With such a promising outlook, you may be wondering how to get started with retailer work.

Step 1

Visit the local malls in your area. Make sure that you are clean and neatly dressed in business casual wear (i.e. cotton pants, dressy capris, knee length skirts, collared shirts, turtlenecks, walking shoes, clogs, leather shoes). Find a retailer that you are interested in and apply for the job in person while there.

Step 2

Go online to see if there is a retailer near you that is hiring. CraigsList.org is a great place to start. Check under either the “Retail/Wholesale” section or the “Jobs” section. You can also check AllRetailJobs.com. Search your local area and select the various fields that are of interest to you (i.e. cashier, sales, security, stock). While you can call the retailer or fax them your resume, it might be easier to simply email them your resume. If the retailer gives you instructions on how to apply for the job, make sure that you follow them. This is important because this is your first impression.

Step 3

Talk to any friends or family members who work for a retailer – either now or in the past. They may know about a job opening or have a connection. This can actually help you get a job.

Step 4

Always be prepared to take an impromptu personality assessment test. Oftentimes this is referred to simply as a “job fit” test. These are given whenever you show up to a retailer to apply for employment. They’re meant to determine whether or not you have the right temperament for dealing with the high-pressure that is involved with this work. It will also let the retailer know whether or not you are trustworthy. Now is also when you want to show the manager why you are so passionate about this type of work and that you really do have a good, solid work ethic. You want to assure the manager that you are going to be able to deal with the customers regardless of how difficult they may be. These are the main characteristics that a manager is looking for in any employee he hires.

Step 5

Once you have taken these steps all you can do is wait for the store manager to call you and set up an interview. Make sure that you are always dressed professionally whenever you go to these interviews. Of course, it is also very important for you to make sure that you are on time. It is even better if you can show up 5 or 10 minutes early.

Tips

Take your time when finding work because you want this to be a position that you will enjoy working in for quite a while.
