Manager retail is person who is responsible for the management of retail outlet or store, within the company’s guiding policies. The main function played by a retail manager’s job is to improve the commercial performance of a store by optimizing its profitability and increasing its turnover. They also play additional roles, such as managing and motivating staff, meeting customer demand and finding new ways to improve sales figures.

  • Maintaining the display of products and the premises.

  • Maintenance of stocks and reordering when necessary, through manual or computerized systems.

  • Organizing promotions and sales.

  • Handling customer queries and complaints.

  • Monitoring market trends in the consumer industry, and what local competitors are doing.

A retail manager job can be very demanding role on ones time schedule, depending on the type of store and its opening and closing hours. The average amount of time spent by a full time retail manager is around 38hours per week. Retail managers are often expected to work through weekends, and are usually the earliest people to enter the store, so as to prepare for the day. They will also stay in the store up to closing time, to ensure that systems and store premises are closed down securely.

The entry requirements for manger retail jobs tend to vary from one company to next. Some companies may require candidates to possess a high school diploma, while others may require them to have a degree or equivalent qualification. Of much more importance, is the experience of working with customers, especially in a retail environment. The most common method of entry is through the promotion of retail sales assistants, sales assistants, supervisors and other departmental employees. Some stores will run graduate trainee management schemes, for candidates with particular degrees. These programs will require accepted candidates to undergo a skills training and work placements in one or more of a retail chains stores. Once they have developed the required skills and experience, they can then enter as a retail store manager.

Tips and comments

To qualify for a job as manager retail, candidates are required to possess specialized certifications, such as Level 3 Award, Certificate and Diploma, which have been designed retail manger roles in mind. A foundation degree in retail management or any other field of study will also suffice. Many employees, who enter through entry level jobs and gain the relevant in-house training and experience, will qualify for the position. Suitable candidates should be able to lead and motivate a team, should possess excellent communication skills, be able to work under pressure and handle challenging situations and have a strong sense of responsibility and quick decision making skills. The starting salary for retail manager jobs is around $41,000 a year. But this amount will rise with added experience and seniority.
