An association or union, also occasionally called a voluntary organization or unincorporated association, is a group of individuals entering into an agreement as volunteers to form a body or organization for accomplishment of a special purpose. In other words, an association is an organization surrounding and governing people sharing common interests. Associations are normally mission-based organizations, nonprofit but not necessarily meaning that a positive bottom line is unimportant. Most associations have dues-paying memberships and are typically governed by a board of directors or other volunteer governing body. They have volunteer groups that perform specialized work for the association.
Association management is entirely a distinct field of management because of the unique environment of the associations including human resource management, financial management, meeting management, IT management, and project management. Other unique aspects of association management are membership recruitment and retention; tax-exempt accounting and financial management; development of non-dues revenue and fundraising.
Association management requires that the managers must be familiar with laws and regulations that pertain only to associations and attainment of the knowledge needed to effectively operate in association management through appropriate qualification.
Association management actually requires the managers to have a detailed knowledge about various aspects of an association like incorporation of new associations into law enforcement, direct assistance to enhance the organization, day-to-day association management and administration, advice for the implementation of strategies in line with the goals of the association, conferences and event, management of meetings, business planning, legal and tax advice etc. Moreover what is imperative for the managers to be able to conduct is planning, organizing, staffing, leading, or directing and controlling an organization to do work for fulfilling the goals.
Since resources include deployment and manipulation of human resources, technological resources and natural resources, managers need to have a deep insight as to how and when such deployment of resources would be most appropriate and beneficial for the association. Therefore knowledge management should be filled with variety of strategies and practices used in an organization for identification, creation, representation, distribution and enabling the adoption of insights and experiences. Understandings like these and having experiences would definitely help in gaining knowledge embedded, in either the individuals or the association itself, as processes or practices in management association.
On the other hand on association side, the managers, at most of the times, get to choose, at least sometimes, to do the "right"
thing over the profitable thing, as long as enough divisions are delivering enough profits to make that possible. So it can therefore be said that decision-making or rather a strong decision-making which would be considered most appropriate in the given circumstances is key factor required for a successful management of association. The decision-making power of the manager is his major strength which makes him the most suitable person for the purpose of management of association.
So it can be said with no ambiguity that management association can be seen more clearly as a human action or design to facilitate the production of useful results from a system and by this the manager gets a responsibility of managing himself as well as the others as a pre-requisite.
