The lymphatic system or the lymph system is part of the circulatory system, which consists of tissues and organs. The lymph system is mainly the lymph, lymph nodes and lymph vessels. It helps to bring key nutrients, hormones and oxygen to your cells throughout your blood. It also helps the immune system remove excess fluids, toxins, cancer cells, debris and waste. The National Cancer Institute has reported that a period of over five years a survival rate of 70% in people.
There are four stages of lymph cancer. The stages have to do with how far the cancer has progressed through a person's body. Stage one of lymph cancer attributes that the lymphomas are localized to one lymph node. Stage two the cancer may have spread to two or more lymph nodes which are on the same side of your diaphragm. Stage three consists of the spreading to both sides of the diaphragm. Stage four is the final stage and has progressed to not only the lymph nodes, but also other organs and tissues.
How Fast Can Lymph Cancer Spread?
It is hard to determine exactly how fast lymph cancer can spread through a person's body because it starts in one part of your body than moves to other parts. In most cases the cells that have moved end up just dying off, but sometimes though the cells can start to grow a tumor.
Cancer growth is measured by how fast a tumor doubles its size. The cancer starts with a single cell mutation than it goes on to double to two, than to four, eight, and proceeding on. Some cancers can double in a very short time such as a week while other cancers can take up to six months and longer. Burkitt's lymphoma is known to be the fastest growing cancer.
Treatment for Lymph Cancer
Treatment for cancer of the lymph system depends on the stage that the cancer is in. It also depends on if the cancer is growing slowly or is more aggressive. Stage one and slow growing lymph cancer is to be monitored and treated with chemotherapy and a radiation therapy. The same treatment is advised for all stages of the lymph cancer as long as it is slow growing. If the cancer is aggressive and fast growing should be treated with more intense chemotherapy, radiation and possibly a bone marrow or stem cell transplant.
