Introduction

There are not very many regulations affecting herbal suplements. Most suplements are not regulated, but there are some disclaimers that supplement companies have to list on their product so the customer is aware. Some supplement companies are regulated in the US by the FDA. If the supplement company is regulated by the FDA it will be listed on the bottle, or packaging sometimes.

The US FDA is wanting to control the dietary suplements guidelines, but many consumers don't feel comfortable with it. Many do not feel that it will be properly controlled therefore many do not want any kind of regulations on the suplements.

History

In the early 1900's and before there were no regulations affecting herbal supplements. It wasn't until 1994 when the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 was introduced that caused the use and sale of the supplements to be harder. The DSHE has caused some companies to change the types of supplements that they can sell and how they market them. According to the DSHE of 1994 it can only be sold as a food item. On the packaging it must state that the item is not used to treat, diagnosis, cure or prevent any disease or condition. It must also state that the supplements are not regulated by the FDA. Currently this is the only type of regulations affect herbal supplements and the use of them.
