Have someone walk over the floor and use chalks to identify the noisy areas. Look for gaps around the joists and then use shingles or wood shims to reduce the movement of gap. If you are unable to identify any gaps, then the noise is probably coming from floor and subfloor boards. Identify the nearest possible location from where the noise is coming, and place wood screws there.

Sometimes in an old home, you cant get under the floor and will have to work from above. Use spiral flooring nails through the floor, both nails forming V together. If you have tiled floors they too are relatively simple to repair. If you have a broken or loosen tile simply use adhesive and put them back together. However, if one end of the tile is loosened and there is not enough adhesive, use aluminum foil and cloth. coverage it up, heat it gently, when the adhesive is soft enough, put some more and the let the adhesive get itself cured by placing it over for a an overnight.

If you want to get back your old hardwood floor which had been hidden underneath your room carpet for quite a time, use a drum sander. Clean the remove completely take everything out and then start the drum sander, initially use 20 grit paper, then 40 and then 100. go back and forth in the whole room, going to every nook and corner. Make sure that all the heating and cooling outlets are properly closed and covered. After finishing, use vacuum cleaner to clean everything off. In the end use polyurethane varnish to give final cleansing touches.
