Introduction

A home wireless system is a great addition to the home. These days with many homes having more than one computer, and video gaming systems that use the internet, a home wireless system is a much needed accessory. However, from time to time a home wireless system may not work as well as you would like it to. You may find that you are not getting a strong enough signal or you may find yourself worrying about others, outside of your home using your home wireless system signal. There are some tips to follow that can make your home wireless system signal as strong as possible  and some that will keep your home wireless signal secure.

Step 1

Use a password. While some may see nothing wrong with leaving their home wireless system unprotected, it really is not a good idea. As soon as your home wireless system is installed, go in and change the default password that your provider installed. Make it something that will be hard for those not in your household to guess.

Step 2

Move your router away from outside walls. Half of your home wireless network signal will be sent out of the house if you keep the router near an outside wall. This will mean a weaker signal inside the house.

Step 3

Get a new antenna. If you cannot move your router away from an outside wall by a new antenna. There are antennas made that only transmit through one side, rather than both sides. This way you can be sure that the signal is all being sent into the house with none being sent out into the air outside where it does you no good.

Step 4

Set up your home wireless sytem in a central location within your home. This is especially useful if your home has multiple floors. Having the system centrally located ensures that the signal is transmitted out equally to all devices in the home.

Step 5

Change the channel on the router. Routers come set on a default channel. If many people in your area have the same provider, you are all likely on the same channel. This means you are competing with the entire neighborhood for signals from the same channel. Try choosing another one to see if that improves your signal strength.

Step 6

Remove metal objects from around the home wireless connection. Metal will block the signal. A common problem is a home wireless system set up in a home office. If the office has a metal file cabinet, it leads to problems. Once the file cabinet is removed, things improve greatly.

Step 7

Do not disable the firewall on your router or your computer. Both are necessary for your security when you have a wirless home system.

Step 8

If problems still persist with your wireless home system, you may want to call your provider. They can usually check things out from their end to see if there is anything going on that needs to be fixed. Usually they can do this without coming out to the house.

Tips

From time to time you may have to reset your router. If you are having a problem getting online from any of your devices, give that a try. Once you turn the router back on, often your wireless home system begins to work fine again.
