Introduction

Dressing up for Halloween, a costume party or masquerade ball is a lot of fun. It can also get quite expensive. The cost of costumes, at least good ones, is high. Making home costums is a good way to have fun and save money at the same time. Making your own home costumes does not mean that you cannot wow the other party goers. You just have to use some creativity. Once you start thinking about home costumes that you can make, you will be surprised by how easily and quickly you come up with something.

Step 1

If you are not a sewer, come up with home costumes that require little or no sewing at all. Remember that you can use glue and Velcro. Not every home costume is going to require you to be a whiz at sewing.  There are many home costumes that can be made by draping fabric, gluing or using Velcro. Remember that you are only wearing this home costume for one day, it does not have to be as sturdy as it would have to be if it was an article of clothing to be worn and washed over and over again. Check out patterns you like and figure out a non sewing way to hold them together.

Step 2

Take a look around your house to find items that can be turned into a home costume. An old tablecloth with some paper plates, plastic utensils, toy food and plastic ants glued on, could turn you into a picnic. This home costume is cute and would literally only take minutes to make. Think of other items around your home that can be made into a unique, easy home costume. The ideas are endless once you begin your search.

Step 3

Search the Internet for easy to make, unusual home costumes. There are some wonderfully creative people in the world. Many of these people use the Internet and are willing to share tips and ideas. A quick search will show you just how creative people can be. Once you begin to see some ideas for home costumes, you will most likely be able to come up many more on your own. Often it just takes a few ideas to get our minds working.

Step 4

Think about characters from your favorite old movies. Or even your favorite decade. Raid  your closet and those of your friends and relatives to come up with clothing that can mimic the decade or the movie of your choice. You can usually easily transform yourself by choosing the right clothing, hair style and makeup. These are often some of the easiest and most fun home costumes to make.

Step 5

Host a home costumes idea party. Invite friends, ask everyone to bring items from home that can be used. These items include clothing, jewelry, wigs and craft supplies. Let everyone pick the items they want and get to work. Working together, you will be able to come up with many more ideas for the perfect home costume. It is also a fun get together for friends. Serve refreshments, listen to music and have a great time.

Tips

A costume does not have to be elaborate to be a great costume. Often the winning costume at an event is simple, yet unique. Coming up with something that the average person would not think of, but would find brilliant when someone else thinks of it, is often the winner.
