History

The founder of Ruth Chris Steakhouse is a women who attributed her name to the establishment, Ruth Fertel. Born on 1927 in the city of New Orleans, later moving to Homeplace, Louisiana Ruth had a relatively happy childhood growing up with her brother and parents. In school she demonstrated that she was quite bright and even managed to skip several grades and attend in LSU in Baton Rouge at the age of 15. After graduating and a brief stint working at LSU, the founder of Ruth Chris Steakhouse embarks upon the event of marriage, marrying Rodney Fertel. After having two children together they open up a racing stable, Ruth Fertel gains a thoroughbred training license and becomes the first female horse trainer in Louisiana.

After a decade of marital bliss the couples relationship erodes and they filed for divorce in 1958. Seven years later while perusing the local paper she comes across an ad that is selling a Steak-House, Ruth decides to mortgage her house and buy this new venture. In 1976, after many years of success running the Steakhouse a kitchen fire starts that completely destroys the restaurant. However, Ruth dose not let this stifle her dreams and purchases a building a few blocks away, calling it the Ruth Chris Steakhouse. In 1976, a man named Tom Morgan approaches Ruth and introduces the idea starting a franchise, Ruth agrees and the first franchise Chris Steakhouse is opened in Baton Rouge. From this Ruth Chris Steakhouse grows to become a global phenomena with numerous establishments being located around the world.
