How to Decide Between Two Homes that you Like

Looking for a new home is an exciting adventure. If you are lucky you find a home that you fall in love with and the decision to make an offer is a simple one. However, there are times when you may find two homes that you really like. You are then left with trying to decide whether you should go with house a, or house b. Luckily, with a little thought and some time to contemplate, you will be able to determine if house a or house b is the best for you and your family.

Step 1

  • Grab a paper and pen to jot down some notes about both house a and house b. List house a on one side of the paper and house b on the other side. Write down everything that you like about each house. Try to list every detail, for example if house a has more closet space, write that down, if house b has a larger master bedroom, write that down.

Step 2

  • Write down a list of things you do not like about house a and house b. On a separate sheet of paper, begin like you did above by writing down house a and house b. Only this time you are going to think about all the things that you do not like as much. If the yard is too small in one, or the shower not spacious, this is where you would write that.

Step 3

Do some research. Look up information about schools in the area for both house a and house b. Take a drive by the neighborhoods for both houses a few times. You will want to take a ride by in both the afternoon and then again at night. Do this on a week day and on the weekend. This will give you some idea of how noisy and active the neighborhood is. You will also be able to estimate the ages of the children in the area if you drive by when they are likely to be out playing. This may be a factor in your decision if you have children. You may also want to look for stores, restaurants, parks and entertainment areas close by.

Step 4

  • Study your information on both house a house b. Make a cup of tea, sit down with your family and go over your lists and findings. Determine which items are most important to you, and which are not. This will help you to narrow down the list. At the end you will see if house a or house b is the house that suits your family. The one that has the features you want, in the neighborhood that suits you should be the best choice for you.

Tips

Discuss the pros and cons of both houses with the other members of the family. Listen to all opinions as someone may be able to point something out that you had not thought of. Relax and stay calm. While house hunting is exciting, it can also be stressful. If you feel yourself or others in the family becoming stressed, take a break and then come back to it.
