Not everyone is eligible for Child Tax Credits, If there is no child or if the person you are claiming for is over the age of seventeen then you cannot claim for child tax credits. The child whom you are claiming for has to be a resident or citizen of the country that you filed you federal income tax return. The child would have to be living with the taxpayer for a period not less than six months and is in close relation to the taxpayer. The dependent can be the taxpayer's child, stepchild,foster child, adopted child, sister or brother, a grandchild or brother and sister's child. The credit law and refunds will be different with other  countries.

Most tax experts will charge to do your income tax return. Ensure that the child or children that you are claiming for has not been claimed by someone else. If that child has been claimed by someone else, then the person with the higher adjusted income will be the one to receive payment. There is no limit to the amount of dependents that you can claim Child Tax Credits for. Bear in mind that it is one Thousand dollars for each dependent, so if you have six dependents, then the most you will receive would be six thousand dollars, plus additional tax credits.
