Great Advice For Adverse Credit

Introduction

Those who find themselves in adverse credit situations are often at a loss as to what to do in order to improve the situation. Adverse credit can have a major impact on your ability to buy a home and car. Adverse credit can even impact your ability to get a job, or rent an apartment. There are some steps that you can take to turn your adverse credit situation around. However, be warned that this will require some time and effort on your part. Improving your credit is something that you can do on your own. You do not have to hire someone to do this for you.

Step 1

Order your credit reports from all three credit reporting agencies. These agencies are Equifax, Transunion and Experian. It is important to check all three reports since they may all have different items on them. Check these reports for inaccuracies. If you find anything that you feel is an error, you should file a dispute. A dispute will be investigated and you should have an answer as to the results of the investigation within 30 days. Having errors on your credit report can result in adverse credit.

Step 2

Pay down your credit card debt. If you have high balances on your credit cards, that could have an adverse credit effect. Pay down your balances until they are less than half of your available credit.  For example, if your available credit is $600, you never want to have over $300 charged to that card.

Step 3

Being late on payments is another thing that can have an adverse credit impact. Always be sure to send in payments so they will be on time. Even when paying online, submit your payment at least a few days before the actual due date. It also helps if you can send in a little more than your minimum payment. This helps pay down your balance quicker, which is better for you.

Step 4

If you are going to be late, speak to your creditors. The only way to turn adverse credit around is to take control of your finances. If you are going to be late or are already behind on payments do not avoid your creditors. This only makes things worse for you. You may be able to work something out with those you owe. Perhaps a hardship payment plan or some way that you can satisfy your obligations. Keep the dialogue open and be willing to come to an agreement.

Step 5

Learn to live within your means. Adverse credit often happens when people start buying items that they cannot afford. Make it a rule for yourself that you only buy something when you have the cash to pay for it. Living within your means may be difficult at first but in the long run it is something that you will be happy about.

Tips

Be wary of companies that promise to turn your adverse credit situation around quickly for a fee. Often they are only going to do things that you can do on your own. These will not turn your adverse credit around quickly. It takes time and many times these companies are unable to deliver what they have promised.
