Introduction

Because of medical advances, doctors are doing simple surgery in their place of business instead of having their patients go to the hospital to have it done. This allows the patient to avoid an overnight stay in the hospital and also offers them the convenience of having it done in a familiar place. Often patients feel more comfortable having simple surgeries done in a place that they know.

History

Before having surgery in your doctor’s office, there are a few things that you need to know like what kind of anesthesia will be used. Most of the time you will have ambulatory anesthesia which allows you to wake up quickly and go home soon after the surgery is complete. Not all surgery can be done in the doctor’s office but small surgeries can be. Some of these include: mole removal, breast augmentation, hernia repair, and getting your tubes tied. According to news sources, upwards of 12 million surgeries are being done in doctors offices each and every year. Some doctors do not want the extra insurance to be able to perform the simple surgery in their office and will only do them in the hospital.

Features

However there is some concern that this is not the safest practice in America. It use to be that the hospital was such a sterile place and everything had to be white, which signified cleanliness. This belief has changed but when deciding to have surgery in your doctor’s office, there are some things to take into consideration and have answered before you decided to have surgery in the doctor’s office. You want to make sure that if an emergency does arise during the surgery, your doctor’s office is going to be able to handle it. If you have any medical conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes or a heart condition it is better to not even consider having surgery in your doctor’s office. This can be too dangerous for you and your doctor should not even consider it. How will they handle it if you have a problem with breathing, do they have the equipment in the office to handle it? Another thing to ask before having surgery in your doctors office is, if you do have a problem how fast can they get you the medical help that you might need? You also need to make sure that the doctor has a license to operate in his office. These are some of the questions that you should have answered before you have surgery. You should also make sure that your insurance will pay if you have surgery in the doctor’s office.
