Introduction

If you're set to have surgery the next day, you will go through a series of preparation methods, instructions and final tests to guarantee safety and success. Depending on the operation, some patients are required to undergo different checks and examinations to make sure that they are physically and mentally fit for the procedure. The surgeon and medical team will discuss the details with the patient so that he knows what to expect and final adjustments can be made to ensure comfort and satisfaction.

Visualization

When set for surgery the next day, the patient must visualize his new outlook afterwards. How will the operation change his lifestyle? Does he need to embark on new habits and activities to cope with the effects? The day before the surgery should be a time for the patient to become emotionally and mentally prepared so that recovery is fast and successful.

The patient will be given all the specifics of the operation again by at least two medical professionals. The other professional will serve as a witness that the patient has agreed to the operation and signed the form knowing all the risks involved and with realistic expectations. The patient will be asked for consent to administer medications and anesthesia for surgery the day before. Other documents might also need signing depending on the hospital or institution. The costs should be confirmed so that patients are aware of all the fees and the no charges and fees are hidden from his knowledge.

Tips and comments

Asking Final Questions

After the patient has gone through different diagnostic tests and examinations to make sure that he is qualified for surgery the next day, it will be good to set a final meeting wherein the patient can ask all the final concerns and questions regarding the surgery. The patient can ask how long the surgery will last, if he will feel any pain or discomfort during and after surgery, how long recovery period is expected to last, what are the possible health risks and side effects during and after the procedure, if there are any medications to be taken during recovery and what the surgical site will look like afterwards. At this point, the doctor and patient should have had at least one or more consultations and surgery discussions.

Doctor's Instructions

The doctor will provide final tips to the patient for surgery the next day. The patient will be advised not to engage in any strenuous activities and to eat light. He will be prohibited from eating anything else after midnight except for sips of water. The patient will also be advised to pass stool in the morning to empty his stomach. Patients are advised to rest well the night before the operation to gather their strength and focus. The doctor will also tell the patient which medications and supplements should be avoided the day before the surgery. Surgeons will advise a family member or two to keep watch to keep the patient comfortable and free of anxiety by constantly communicating and giving encouragement.
