How Is Cataract Surgery Performed?

Introduction

Nature has put several extremely sensitive organs in the human body that we do not usually notice but only when we feel some pain in them or face a disease in that specific part of the body, we do feel how important it is to take care of them. One of such highly sensitive and to be carefully treated organs is the eye. It irritates even to read or write about any disease or pain in the eye as we can’t even imagine touching it with more than necessary force. It does certainly make us miss a heartbeat when we come to know of a surgery to be performed on the eye.

History

But there is no need to be afraid of the surgery for the eyes because it’s a pain for a short time rather than a pain of a lifetime. Still talking about the cataract surgery, it is not a very painful thing to encounter because this surgery is not at all painful. Cataract is basically a disease of eyes that is caused when we feel impairment in vision, this is caused by a sudden appearance of some cloudy object in your eyes as a result of which you start looking at the things as though they are blurred. Cataracts are basically a dilemma that happens to the lens of the eye and the function required by the lens is to focus the light on the retina, which in turns make the image of your eye. The distortion in the image formation results in the distortion in vision. Usually this disease reveals itself in the growing age and is commonly observed to affect both the eyes simultaneously; however the single eye cataract attacks at the early stages of age are not very rare.

Features

Let us come to the main topic, which is how the actual cataract surgery is performed. The first step in the process is to make two small incisions on either side of the eye. The incisions are made in the transparent layer covering the eye. This layer is known as the cornea. To protect the eye from any damage and to make it retain its shape after the surgery, some thick fluid is added to the eye where due to its consistency, it stays and helps retain the shape of the eye. The fluid is made from the minerals and nutrients that generally are formed in a human body and are in no way harmful to the eye.

The next step is to make a small opening in the bag of the eye, this helps the surgeon to operate the eye as the breaking of the bag results in the displacement of the lens from its actual place and then it becomes easy to break the lens with the help of the laser and to remove the pervious lens, replacing it with the new one. Now the liquid matter added to the eye is removed and the incisions previously made in the eye get healed up soon and does not require the surgeon to stitch or close them.

Tips and comments

It has been said that cataract surgery is one of the safest surgical procedure in today's time and so you really should not worry and trust your surgeon on this procedure.
