Introduction

Once you land the job you have wanted or needed, it’s time to prepare yourself for your first day on the job. Getting ready to start a new job can be kind of stressful. Here are some basic tips to help you when you are starting a new job.

Mental Preparation When Starting a New Job

When you find out you have been hired by a company and given a start date, it’s time to get serious and do some preparations for your first day on the job. Being prepared mentally, emotionally and physically will make your first day go much smoother than it would if you don’t take time to get it together before showing up for work.

First of all, you need to make sure you are mentally prepared. You don’t need to spend hours on thinking what will be expected of you on the job, but you do need to be fully aware of the job related expectations when starting a new job.

Once you know and fully understand the expectations you can assess where you are in the mental preparation process. Being mentally prepared is one of the most important steps you need to take before starting any new job. The mental aspect of the entire process is where success begins. If you are mentally prepared you are much more likely to experience the emotional and physical preparedness naturally.

Emotional and Physical Preparation

Part of the physical preparedness could include you taking a little time off in between jobs. If you go right from your old job into the new job, it can be much more tiring for you. Taking a few days off will allow your mind and body to relax. Sometimes leaving your old co-workers behind can be an emotional experience. You may even need time to readjust while you cope with some of the sadness you may feel.

Before starting a new job, you want to make sure you take a little time to research your new employer. Learn everything you can learn about them. If they have a website, that’s sometimes a great place to find a great deal of information about them. You may even want to ask your friends and family if they know anyone that works for your new employer. Sometimes it is helpful to know someone that is already on the inside.

Make sure you are well rested before starting a new job. Taking time off in between jobs can help, but you still need to make sure you are giving your body the rest it needs. Adjust your bed time and wake up time accordingly. It doesn’t hurt to sleep in some, but you don’t want to get in the habit of sleeping late if you are working a job that requires you get up early.

A great way to reduce some stress when starting a new job is to plan your wardrobe in advance. Do this for at least the first week. Decide what you are going to wear each day for the first full work week. If you can manage, it wouldn’t hurt to plan for 2 full weeks ahead. This will give you less to deal with when trying to get out the door to work.

You definitely don’t want to be late when you are starting a new job. Plan your travel route accordingly. Maybe take a drive to the job site and back home utilizing a couple of different routes. Think about what traffic is going to be like during your commute times. Do you know alternative ways to get to your job? Leave early rather than late. It’s always best to arrive a little early than it is to be one minute late when starting a new job.

Being fully prepared should create much less stress for you.
