How To Choose a Theme For Home Christmas Decor

When your home is thoughtfully decorated for the holidays, it can be a joyous, peaceful setting. On the other hand, if you simply leave your home Christmas decor to the whims of whatever you picked up at the after-Christmas sales last year, the effect can be a hodge-podge of mismatched ornaments and ideas. Plan ahead for your next Christmas and adopt a theme that will look great and feel comfortable. Each year, it's alright to change your theme to match your family mood and location. With careful planning, some home Christmas decor can be implemented into several different themes over the years.

Step 1

Browse through your existing ornaments and decorations. Identify any family heirlooms or extra-special ornaments that you feel you must display in order to set a tradition for your own home Christmas decor. An angel tree-topper that has been passed on from family to family, for example, may be the perfect item around which you can develop a theme of angels and music. The same item could set the tome for a collection of nativity scenes and related Christmas ornaments. If you have a set of all blue-colored Christmas tree ornaments, you can create a monochromatic color theme by adding silver, gold or more shades of blue to your home Christmas decor.

Step 2

Identify activities that your family is involved with throughout the year. Kids that are active in sports may enjoy a Christmas theme with a focus on baseball, soccer or gymnastics. A couple that enjoys skiing can easily create a theme around that pastime for their own, personal home Christmas decor. Folks who love music find that decorating their tree with small musical-instrument ornaments sets the tone for other complementary decorations throughout the house.

Step 3

Determine whether your home Christmas decor is primarily for children or if you are decorating for a more mature audience for friends and family. If your emphasis is on building a fun, memorable Christmas season for the kids, develop your decorating scheme around Santa's workshop, cartoon characters or teddy bears and dolls. For more grown-up themes that are appropriate when you entertain business guests or neighborhood acquaintances, stick with classic themes like a Victorian Christmas or a modernistic version with simple lights, strands of ribbons and spectacular geometric ornaments.

Step 4

Consider your budget before you finalize which theme your are going to display this year for your home Christmas decor. If money is tight, you'll want to go for a theme that uses standard Christmas ornaments, then add your own creative twist. One way to do that is to settle with a snowflake theme. Purchase a large package of very inexpensive snowflake ornaments and several spools of cheap, colorful ribbon. Supplement the decorations with homemade snowflakes that you and the family can make in the evenings. Hang a combination of store-bought snowflakes and homemade snowflakes by ribbons on the tree, on the stair railing, from the ceiling and across doorways to create a beautiful home Christmas decor scenario.

Step 5

Visit Christmas craft fairs, holiday displays in the mall and your friends' and families' Christmas displays to get ideas for themes in upcoming years. When you have an idea, jot it down in a notepad so that you can embellish your favorite ideas as you see new ornaments and seasonal items. The best home Christmas decor is what happens when you develop your own theme out of the ideas you've captured in your mind's eye. Trust your instincts, and remember that next year you can do something completely unique and different again.
