Introduction

Small home appliances help our kitchens run more smoothly and make things more pleasant. After all, where would be  without our coffee makers, toasters and blenders. Keeping our small home appliances clean and organized can sometimes be a challenge. However, there are some quick and easy tips to help keep our small home appliances neat, clean and organized.

Step 1

Cleaning small home appliances should be done on a regular basis. Items such as the electric can opener, coffee maker and toaster should be wiped down after use. By getting in the habit of wiping spills and spots each time the item is used, you avoid stubborn caked on stains.

The blender is a small home appliance that gets a lot of use and often becomes quite messy in the process. An easy way to clean the blender is to put a few drops of dish soap in and fill with water. Turn it on and let the blender clean itself. Rinse well after cleaning.

To clean the garbage disposal, always run water while it is being used. If odors are coming from the disposal, an easy way to get rid of them is to cut up peels from citrus fruit, put then in the garbage disposal and turn it on. The unpleasant odor will be replaced with the scent of citrus.

Step 2

Keep a folder titled small home appliances in your file cabinet, desk or anywhere in the house where you store important information. In this folder keep the instruction manuals and receipts from when the item was purchased. Having this information available will be useful if something goes wrong with the appliance. Often if something is under warranty, you will need the receipt. Knowing exactly where this items are is a big help.

Step 3

For small kitchens, try to find small home appliances that does more than one job. For example, try to buy a food processor that can also be used as a blender. There are some on the market that can be used as a blender, food processor and juicer. This is one item that does three jobs. It takes up much less space than three separate appliances would.

Another option is small home appliances that can be placed under a cabinet. Many can openers are made this way. You can also find other items for under the cabinet as well.

Step 4

Check for wear and tear on your small home appliances periodically. It is a good idea to get into the habit of checking for worn cords, broken or loose parts and chips or cracks. A good time to do this is after the holidays. The holidays often give small home appliances a workout. Making a habit of going over them in January is a good habit to get into. This way you are not surprised by a worn cord, or broken blade the next time you are ready to use something.

Step 5

Many small home appliances can be repaired at home. Instructions can often be found in do it yourself books or on the Internet. Items such as replacing a cord or changing broken parts for new can be performed by most owners. However, if at anytime you feel uncomfortable servicing an item, taking it to a professional to repair is the best option.

Tips

Buy small home appliances when they are on sale. These types of items are often listed in sales fliers. However spring seems to bring about great deals on these items. Perhaps due to the fact that wedding showers are often held in early spring.
