Introduction

How To Prepare Your Home For New Cats

When planning to get a new cat, you should always keep in mind that your home will now also be your cats home. Your cats home should have everything that they will need to stay happy, healthy, and comfortable. While cats are not usually very much work or hard to take care of, there are things that you will need to do in advance to prepare your house for the cat's arrival. Just like any other pet, a cat is a commitment and will make your house into a cats house.

Step 1

The first thing that should be done to turn your house into a cats home, is to ensure that there are no ways that they can escape out of the house. If you are planning to keep your cat indoors, they can get quite nosey and want to explore the outside world. Cats will look for any and all areas in your house that they might be able to squeeze through and get outside. Places that you should check at for any holes in window screens, doors that do not close all the way, crawl spaces, and any other areas that they could potentially get outside from.

Step 2

In a cats home, there are a few things that you will need to buy. Cats always need to have a food and water dish. The water dish should usually be left out and filled with fresh water every day. Unlike humans, cats are not able to tell us when they are thirsty. Purchase a nice and sturdy water dish that you will not mind leaving out. Cats sometimes like to put their paws in the water, so water sure that it is a dish that can not be knocked over. Whether you choose to leave the food dish out is up to you. Some cat owners only feed their cats once a day, while others feed twice or leave food out all day.

Step 3

A cat bed is anoter essential purchase for your cats home. Cats love being able to curl up in a comfortable spot and take a nice little cat nap. Cat beds come in several different sizes, so be sure to buy one that will be large enough for your cat, yet not big enough for a dog. While some cats prefer cat beds, others may just love to lay on the couch or in your bed when they are resting.

Step 4

Make sure that there are no breakable items left out when you are preparing a cats home. Cats love to jump on high surfaces and furniture. If there are breakable items left out or near the edge of furniture, a cat could potentially knock it over and break it by accident. You can train your cat to stay off furniture, but this can take some time to do.

Step 5

Buy lots of little cat toys to put in your cats home. These little guys love to run around and chase toy mice. Cats also love watching and chasing laser pointers. This is a great way to get them to exercise. Catnip is another type of product that will get your cats hyper and active. Some toys can be purchased with catnip already in them.
