Great Advice For Small Home Garden

Introduction

Some people worry that they only have a small area to set up their garden, but the truth is with a little imagination and lots of creativity you can have an outstanding small home garden. There are no rules when setting up a small home garden other than making your space more productive and comfortable. A lot of people tend to think in horizontal dimensions, but you need to consider all the extra space that can be gained by going vertical as well. Check out some of these neat ideas for a small home garden, and you are sure to find a few that will work great for your home.

Step 1

If the small home garden is to be used by everyone in the family, be sure and take into consideration the needs of adults and children of all ages. For young children, you might want to have a small section of grass that is soft on the knees for playing with ample room to set up a swing set.

Step 2

A great way to save space and make the most of your small home garden is with a wooden deck that rises up in the air vertically. If you make the deck about six feet high, you can plant any number of beautiful flower beds or a small vegetable patch underneath. Another neat idea is using the space under the deck for a big sandbox for small children. The top of the deck can be used for sun bathing, relaxing, entertaining and barbecuing.

Step 3

If you are a vegetable gardener at heart and you just have to squeeze in some space for vegetable gardening in a small home garden, consider non-traditional garden beds. Most folks always plot out their vegetable gardens in a square or rectangular design. However, if you measure out garden beds about two feet out from your fence line and use them as garden border beds following the fence line, you will save a lot of space compared to one big square. Climbing vegetables can use the fence or wall to climb up, and the extra space you save can be used for a picnic table or a grassy area for teenagers to play outdoor sports. Plant flowers between the vegetables and you have a beautiful small home garden.

Step 4

Make your small home garden look larger than it really is. If you have a wall enclosure, make sure it is all painted in one continuous color. Painting the wall or fence the same color as the exterior color of your home will make the area look even bigger. If you use several different materials or colors in a small home garden it makes it look even smaller. Use a water fountain, bird bath, bird table or a large landscaping plant at the largest end of the small home garden to become the main focus of the area. This will make the whole area look bigger.

Tips

Consider a large flower garden at one end of the small home garden area with a mix of your favorite flowers. A small pond with aquatic plants and a waterfall is both relaxing and a beautiful focal point for home gardens.
