What Is a Football Roster

Introduction

A football roster is a compiled list of all the football players who are supposed to be in a particular football team. Football roster contains the names of the players along with their past experience of playing football, their height and weight, their hometown and their position in the field.

Football roster size explains the number of maximum players a particular football team may contain. An NFL football team may contain maximum 53 players. The main purpose of drafting a football roster is to define the position of each player. A football roster depicts three main types of positions that are offensive positions, defensive positions and special team positions.

The offensive positions in football roster are described below:

  • Quarterback (QB): Quarterback is the leader of the team and is the one who receives the ball from the center at the start of each play.
  • Halfback: Usually halfback is responsible for carrying the ball on run plays and his main role is to run with the football.
  • Fullback: This player lines up in the offensive backfield.
  • Wide Receiver: This player is responsible for catching passes from the quarterback and lines up on or near the line of scrimmage.
  • Tight End: This player lines up with the offensive tackle and serves as a receive and a blocker as well.
  • Offensive Tackle: This player positions on the outside of the offensive guard. There are two offensive tackles.
  • Offensive Guard: This player lines up on either side of the offensive center.
  • Center: This player positions in the middle of the offensive line and is responsible to hike the ball to the quarterback at the start of each play.

The defensive positions in football roster are described below:

  • Defensive End: A player who positions at the end of the defensive line.
  • Nose Tackle: A player who positions directly across from the center.
  • Linebacker: A player who positions behind the defensive lineman and in front of the defensive backfield.
  • Cornerback: A player who positions on the outside of the formation.
  • Safety: A player who positions in the secondary between.
  • The special team positions in football roster are described below:
  • Gunner: A player who positions outside the offensive line.
  • Holder: A player who is responsible to catch the snap from the center and pass it to the place kicker.
  • Kick Return: A player who is responsible to catch kick offs and return them in opposite direction.
  • Long Snapper: A player who positions in center and is responsible to make longer snaps and punts and field goal attempt.
  • Place kicker: A player who is responsible to kick the ball on kickoffs when holder place the ball down.
  • Punter: A player who positions behind the line of scrimmage and is responsible to catch the long snap from the center and kicks the ball after dropping it towards his foot.
  • Punt Returner: A player who is responsible to catch the ball after it has been punted.

Tips

A football roster can be edited before the drafts begin, once the draft has started football roster can not be changed then.
