Introduction

You may call football the American pastime of winter. Every Superbowl Sunday and you do not see a soul on the street. Whether you like the game or not, whether you know the finalists or not, you have to watch it and that’s the unspoken rule of the time. Watch it at least for the ads, the ladies would say.
The game originated from rugby football and is played between two teams of eleven players who aim to score points by advancing the ball into the opposite team’s end zone. The field is generally 360 by 160 feet in area with goal lines that are 100 yards apart and end zones that are 10 yards wide. There are two goalposts at the end of each end zone that connected by a 10 feet long cross bar.

History

Virginia is one of the most populous states in the in the United States, thanks to its close proximity to the country’s capital. However, the state does not have a National Football League, or NFL, team. While not all states have NFL teams, the fact that most Virginians consider Redskins, the neighboring DC team as their own is why they do not have their own team. However, most high schools and top colleges in the state do have football teams.
Virginia Cavaliers representing the University of Virginia is possibly the most popular football team in Virginia. They compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championships each year. The team was established in 1988 and has grown since then into a multi-million dollar franchise that plays in front of more than 61,000 fans on its home turf, the Scott stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Features

The Hookies represent the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Like Cavaliers, this Virginia football team also plays in the NCAA and ACC championships. Their home games are played at Lane stadium, which can seat more than 65,000 fans. The Lane stadium is considered to be one of the loudest football stadiums in the country and has been voted number one in the ESPN’s “Top 20 Scariest Places to Play.” The Hookies also have the third longest bowl game streak in the entire United States. This team has played in every postseason since 1993.

Tips and comments

The West Virginia University, or the WVU, also has a football team called the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers are also compete in the ACC championship and are probably the only Virginia football team that has never won the ACC. The team was ranked number 3 in 2007, its best position till date. The team also got its first 11-win season in 2005 and followed it up in 2006.
So, between the Cavaliers, Hookies and Mountaineers, most Virginia football fans have pliantly of choice, although some of them may miss having an NFL team considering the state’s population. With the teams, especially the Hookies and Cavaliers, having access to some of the best amenities in the football world, Virginia football fans can sure hope for their own team in near future.
