No physical contact can be made with the face, neck and head of the player by the blocker. There are a number of rules regarding the use of hands, body and arms by the defender. Some of these include, firstly, their usage only as a protection against the runner or other team members of the opposing team, secondly, to obstruct the opponent by pushing or pulling him out of the line of scrimmage and thirdly, to push or pull the challenger team member in an officially permitted manner to gain the loose ball. They can also be used in an attempt to legally block a pass receiver of the opposing team. The members of the defense line are only permitted to use their palms above the shoulders of the opposing team members in order to ward him off. Blocking is permitted towards any opponent by all team members as long as it does not interfere in the pass, and fair catch.
