Washington is the capital of the United States and is the District of Columbia formally. It is also referred to as DC or Washington only. It is a not a part of any state in the United States. The city is named after the first president of USA George Washington. It was founded in 1791 to the east of George Town. It is the 24th most populous sate in United States according to a survey held in 2010. Most of the nation’s monuments and museums are located here and are main attraction for people who come to DC vacations. Moreover, this district is also the Federal capital of the United States. Washington DC holds headquarters of many companies which are located here. Congress is the supreme authority of United States. The U.S Congress passed an Act on July 16 1790, and approved the creation of a capital to be located on Potomac River. The land was donated by the states of Virginia and Maryland. To a great surprise, original shape of this district was 10 square miles (a total of 100 square miles). George Town Port was founded in 1751 while City of Alexandria and Virginia were founded in 1749. Boundaries stones were placed around the borders of the Federal District at every mile. Tourists on DC vacations can still see some of these stones still standing there.
