Introduction

Lake Como is a glacial lake in Lombardy which is the third largest lake in Italy after Garda and Maggiore. It has made Como vacations one of the most wanted ones. History

Lake Como is also described as Lake of Como or Como Lake. The name comes from the Romans as it was called Comum by them. It is not solely called by its name which means it is never called just “Como.” Its weather is mild and has the typical Mediterranean climate where tropical and sub-tropical plants are grown all around the year. In winters, the lake maintains a higher temperature where the average daily temperature is from around 13 C to 30 C.  Snowfall majorly affects the higher regions and rainfall is heaviest during May and lowest during winters. The famous villa Carlotta was built in the 1690s and covers over 70,000 m2 at Tremezzo. It has an Italian garden with steps, fountains and sculptures. This villa was later sold to a Napoleonic politician Giambattista Sommariva. The Villa d’Este was built in 1568 by Tolomeo Gallio who was a native of that time. This house was a home to Caroline of Brunswick during 1816-17. The gardens are completely English style. The villa has now been turned into a hotel. It attracts a huge number of celebrity guests. Villa del Balbianello is famous for its terraced gardens and was built in 1787; it was the last home of the explorer Guido Monzino.  Lake Como also has a ferry service for public transport. In 1826, a motorized service was launched and since 1952, is run under the government. Lake Como is just an hour away from the fashion capital of Italy, Milan. It has one of the most beautiful views on the banks of the lake called the Piazza Cavour. Cathedrals here are known for their architectural styles. As you travel towards north, you will only be able to see the island. It is also called the most curious island on earth because of the forest and the silvery water of the lake.
