Also some landowners experimented fro a variety of crops ranging from silk to cash crops. As the city grew the opportunities for the city in culture and social life also increased. The first theater which was built in America in 1736 was in Charleston. Moreover, it was also the focal point in the American Revolution. British targeted it twice by attacking it the city. However, the British held control of the city for a long time until they left in December of 1782. After they left it was officially renamed to Charleston in 1783.
