History
The first European settlers to live in what is now called Kansas City were French. We know from the writings of François Gesseau Chouteau that a permanent trading post was set-up in 1821 which as that time was referred to as the village of Kansa. The trade in this area was mostly in furs and slowly in farming as well. In the 1840s Kansas City was the starting point for settlers heading west on the Santa Fe and California trails. It was in 1850 that the “Town of Kansas” was incorporated into an official town. A year later in 1851 a newspaper called the Kansas City Ledger was set up and in the same year a telegraph service was established in the Town of Kansas. In 1853 the Town of Kansas officially became the City of Kansas. So what we can see is that Kansas City had a long and interesting history. One of the most interesting things is that during the American Civil War the state of Missouri, in which Kansas City is situated, stayed in the Union. Harry Truman was born in Kansas City and during his time in power the city tried to develop the image of being the crossroads of the world due to its central location on the North American continent.
