History

The city of Cincinnati was formed in 1788 by Colonel Robert Patterson and John Cleves Semmes. In 1790 the governor of the Northwest Territory renamed the city to Cincinnati to honor a society of the Cincinnati of which he was a member. In 1802, the city was chartered as a village. David Ziegler from Germany became the first mayor. It was recognized as a city in 1819. During the period of rapid expansion, citizens started referring to the city as the “Queen City.” In 1859, six carlines were laid in the city to make it easier for people to travel around. Cincinnati also played a major role in the American Civil War. This rich history is a major reason why a lot of people come for Cincinnati vacations.
