Introduction

To most of us, our dogs arent just pets. they are part of the family. They may eat with us, sleep with us and ride in the car with us. We spend countless hours playing with them and hundreds and even thousands of dollars spoiling and caring for them. So why is it that when we go on vacation, we often leave our beloved family members at home in the care of a stranger or boarded up at a strange facility? Many hotels and vacation homes accept pets.

Taking your dogs on your family vacations is fun, not just for you, but for the dogs. Watching your dogs explore a new place is one of the best experiences you will have as a pet owner. Also, what is a vacation without having your beloved best friend at your side?

One reason many people choose to leave their dog at home is because they are afraid he or she will limit what they can do when they travel. This can be true in certain situations, but many times, having your dog along will actually create new opportunities. If you work to incorporate your dog into your vacations, you may end up visiting places you never would have seen otherwise. This includes parks, beaches and dog-friendly shops and restaurants. You may even meet a friend or two. Dogs are great reasons for perfect strangers to strike up conversations.

Taking your dog along can also be cost-effective. Some hotels and vacation rentals may charge a deposit up front, but most of the time, these deposits are nothing compared to the fees  you will pay dog-sitters or dog boarding facilities. Also, when dogs are left alone or in the care of strangers, they may become ill or destructive. That can cost you hundreds and thousands of dollars in veterinarian fees or replacement item prices that you wouldn't have to pay if your dog was by your side.

Most dogs grow attached to their owners, so when their families leave to go on vacations, they become upset and stressed out. It can be very hard to relax while knowing your poor furry family members are at home, worrying about when you are coming back. A stressed out dog can also lead to unwanted behaviors. If your pet is staying in your home with a sitter, he or she may begin to destroy the house or act aggressively. The same can be said if your pet is staying in a boarding facility. Stress can cause your dog to become sick or lethargic. Many dogs, when left alone, will not eat, sleep or use the restroom. Why take that risk when you can take your dog along for a good time?

Tips and comments

If you are planning to start taking your dog along on your vacations, you will need to keep a few things in mind. First of all, make sure you pack his or her necessary supplies. These supplies might include crates, beds, leashes, toys, medications, food, dishes and materials for cleaning up after your dog. Also, it is important that you keep your dogs shots up-to-date and keep a copy of his or her vaccination records. You will also need to keep a record of any health problems or medications your dog is taking. This way, if something happens while you are traveling, an emergency veterinarian or clinic will know how to handle your pet. Finally, make sure your travel accommodations are pet friendly. Make sure you handle all deposits and know where your pet is and isn't allowed to go. If you are staying on a beach, is he or she allowed to accompany you to the ocean? Are there any pet friendly parks or restaurants in the area? This is all information that you will need to know.
