Introduction

If you have an acne problem, then there are several acne skin treatment options available to you.  Some are more costly than others, whereas some just require you to go to the local grocery store and pick up a $10.00 bottle of cream.  If you have a serious case of acne, then you may need to consult with your doctor.  However, there are several methods you can do on your own and several methods your doctor can help you with, when it comes to acne skin treatment. 

History

Acne is caused by a disease of the hair follicles.  Contrary to popular belief, it is not caused by bacteria, however bacteria can play a role in the way the acne is developed.  Unfortunately, there is no one cause of acne as the causes vary from person to person.  Acne occurs when the oil glands are stimulated, causing congested pores, tender red pumps and putsules.  Dermatologists have come up with several methods for acne skin treatment and it is best to consult with your Dermatologist before deciding which method would be most beneficial to you.

Do It Yourself Acne Skin Treatment: 

Use mild cleansers: Some mild cleansers that can help with acne are Dove, Neutrogena, Basis and Purpose brands.  It is suggested you wash your face at least once a day with one of these cleansers.  

Exfoliating cleansers and masques:  There is a variety of mild masques and exfoliating scrubs now on the market to help with your acne skin treatment.  Go for one that is hypoallergenic and free of chemicals and dyes.  

Topical applications:  Topical acne skin treatment medications are also a popular method of taking care of your acne.  They usually come in gel, cream or lotion form.  Some of the more popular ones are ProActiv, Clearsil and Noxzema. 

Pore strips:  If you have acne on a certain spot of your face, try a brand name pore strip.  These pore strips come in different sizes so they can fit on your forehead, nose, chin or wherever your acne problem is.  

What Your Doctor Can Do For Acne:

Topical acne treatment antibiotics and antibacterials:  Doctors can prescribe you a prescription topical cream for your acne.  They usually have ingredients in them such as: erythromycin, clindamycin,  sulfacetamide and azelaic acid.

Oral antibiotics:  Another popular acne skin treatment that your doctor can suggest is an oral antibiotic.  Your doctor may want you to start on a prescription such as tetracycline,  doxycycline and  minocycline.  These sulfa drugs are considered useful for treating acne.

Cortisone injections:  Cortisone injections are also another method for acne skin treatment.  Cortisone injections make pimples and cysts smaller in size and then it flattens them out.

Always consult your doctor for his or her suggestions of which acne skin treatment method would be best for you.  There are a ton of different ways to help clear up acne or get rid of it for good, however one way may work better for you than another way.  A good skin regime for those who experience acne problems is to cleanse at least once daily, twice for better results.  Also, applying a  gel or cream containing 5% benzoyl peroxide is beneficial when it comes to acne skin treatment.  Lastly, before you go to bed, apply a spot cream to your problem areas.
