What Causes Acne?

Introduction

Acne is a skin condition that affects people of all ages. It generally forms when the skin's pores become clogged with debris, such as oil and bacteria. This may lead to whiteheads, blackheads and cysts on the face or body. Although clogged pores are the most prevalent cause, other factors may influence the formation of skin blemishes. Knowing the facts about acne may help reduce the chances of getting the condition.

History

Family History

People with other family members who have acne, such as parents or siblings, can be susceptible to acne. Genetics may be a cause of skin blemishes in some people. Parents may pass on the problem to their children. This may not be the case for everyone; those who have acne through genetics may want to use extra precautions to minimize the problem. Using mild soap or washes may help reduce breakouts.

Menstruation

Some women may experience acne before or during menstruation. It can increase hormone levels and trigger breakouts on the face and body. The problem tends to go away once menstruation ends.

Cosmetics

Certain cosmetics may cause breakouts. Makeup that contains heavy oils or powders may clog the pores. The clogged pores may become worse if women do not thoroughly remove cosmetics from the skin. Those who sleep in makeup may find that they have more acne than usual. It is important to cleanse the skin prior to sleeping. Washing the face allows the skin to breathe and stay free of debris. Also try using hypoallergenic cosmetics that do not cause acne or skin problems.

Tight Clothing

Wearing tight or form-fitting clothing may cause acne on the body. It can also make the problem worse over time. Body blemishes form on the body when sweat and oil plugs the pores. Some people may experience cysts or hard nodules when this happens. These problems may cause pain and swelling. People can wear light fabrics that allow the skin to breathe in order to lessen or prevent blemishes.

Myths

A lot of people believe that certain foods or habits cause acne. Eating chocolate or greasy foods are two myths that do not increase or cause blemishes. Dirt is another myth that some people believe contributes to acne. Dirty skin does not cause the problem but oils and bacteria will.

Treatments

Treatment for acne includes using bacteria-fighting topical medications and washes. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are two common medications used. Both may be prescribed by dermatologists or purchased over the counter. Keep in mind that acne medications may increase breakouts before clearing up the problem.

Tips and comments

Eating healthy fruits and vegetables may help decrease or prevent acne. Many fruits, such as tomatoes and berries, have antioxidants. Antioxidants can help fight and repair cellular damage in the skin. This may help heal acne scars as well.

Wash the face before bed to clear the pores of makeup, oil and bacteria. Use a mild facial or body wash instead of harsh soaps that may dry the skin. Also avoid picking or popping whiteheads and blackheads. This may push plugs deeper into the skin.
