Introduction

Many strides have been taken over the years for cancer breast research and how to treat it. There have been many new studies that have been done, even though with most, it is still too early to see whether it will help in the long run. Any stride towards finding a cure is a step in the right direction. Some studies have suggested that taking drugs like Tamoxifen and Raloxifene, may help women who have risk factors for getting breast cancer. Women do not like taking these drugs because of the side effects that go along with them. New looks are being given to drugs that stop hormones from developing in some women, and these can help to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer. Daily strides are being made in cancer breast research and over the years the survival rate for breast cancer patients has risen.

History

There are new lab test that are starting to be used in the cancer breast research, with one of them being gene studies. The problem is that doctors cannot always tell who is going to have a higher risk of developing cancer and how high the risk will be that the cancer comes back. There are some new imaging methods that are being developed to look at changes that are going on in the breast, this test act as a second set of eyes for the mammogram. The images are loaded onto a computer screen with markers to point out areas that should be looked at more closely. Another type of cancer breast research that is being done is the use of daily doses of radiation that are stronger than ones given previously. Studies have shown that given higher doses of radiation over three weeks works as well as giving lower doses over a five-week period.

Features

New and better drugs are also being looked at for new cancer breast research. There are always improvements that can be made when it comes to the development of new drugs for breast cancer. With all the technology, there is still one easy test that has to be conducted to help discover breast cancer in women. This is a monthly exam that women can do themselves at home and should be conducted one week after having your menstrual cycle. Since most insurance companies will not cover a mammogram until you are older, a self-exam should be encouraged among younger women. It was thought that breast cancer would only affect those that were in their late 40s and up, but many women in their young twenties have been diagnosed. If there is a family history of breast cancer, some insurance companies will now pay for a mammogram.
