Diseases Associated With Digestive System

Digestion is the process by which food particles are broken down into smaller pieces.  Those broken pieces are absorbed by the body in order to build and nourish and to provide energy.  The digestive system consists of a long tube of organs that runs from the mouth to the anus and it includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine, together with the liver, gall bladder, and pancreas, which produce important secretions for digestion that drain into the small intestine.

The diseases caused in Esophagus are as follows. Achalasia is the inability to swallow due to lower esophagus sphincter opening.  Bleeding Varices are bleeding of veins in the esophagus, caused by a liver disease.  Candida Esophagitis is a yeast infection of the esophagus.  Caustic Injury to the Esophagus is tissue damage caused by swallowing a toxic or caustic substance which affects the surface lining of the esophagus.  Cytomegalovirus Esophagitis is an infection of the blood vessels.  Esophageal Ring & Web in which the Esophageal ring is a thin band of tissue that encircles the lining of the esophagus. This band of tissue is thicker and more fibrous, but narrower than a ring, called as esophageal web.  Esophageal Spasm is pain and difficulty in swallowing due to abnormal clenching of the muscles in the esophagus.  Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or acid reflux is a digestive condition where the stomach’s acid backs up into and damages the esophagus.  Herpes Esophagitis is a viral infection of the esophagus, caused by the herpes simplex virus.  Medication-Induced Esophagitis is the injury to the esophagus caused by medications.  Neurogenic Dysphagia is difficulty in swallowing food caused by impairment of the nervous system.  Radiation Induced Esophagitis is an injury to the esophagus caused by radiation therapy.  Scleroderma of the Esophagus is an autoimmune disorder, where the body mistakenly attacks itself, characterized by thickening of the skin. Stricture is the narrowing of the esophagus caused by a scar.

The diseases caused in Stomach are as follows.  Gastritis is the inflammation of the lining of the stomach.  Peptic Ulcer is a painful ulcer in the lining of the stomach or small intestines.  Stomach Cancer or Gastric Cancer is a malignant tumor or abnormal growth in the lining of the stomach.  Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome is a rare digestive disorder caused by a tumor of the pancreas called gastrinoma.
The diseases caused in small intestine are as follows.  Crohn's Disease is an inflammation of the digestive tract caused by an abnormal immune reaction to food, bacteria, or even the lining of the intestines or colon.  Bowel Obstruction stool is mechanically or functionally blocked from progressing downs the digestive tract which may lead to tissue damage and even tissue death.  Lactose Intolerance due to lactose enzyme deficiency which is responsible in breaking down sugars into absorbable forms.  Meckel's Diverticulum is an abnormal growth which resemble like small pouch on the wall of the lower part of the small intestine.  Mesenteric Ischemia is the damage to the tissue of the intestine caused by acute or sudden lack of blood supply to the specific area.  Short Bowel Syndrome is the loss of small intestine’s function due to disease or surgery, which result in lack of absorption of nutrients.
