About various types of Diabetes

Introduction

There are two primary types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Therefore, if you have been diagnosed with diabetes then it is essential to identify the exact type of diabetes that you have, to receive better treatment. Of course, diabetes cannot yet be completely treated, but you can get amazing results by controlling it.

Key differences

The Type 1 diabetes is also referred to as Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus or IDDM. In this type of diabetes the body attacks its own pancreas as a result of which the pancreas becomes unable to produce insulin. Apart from this, abnormal levels of antibodies have been found in patients diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Antibodies are the small proteins which are responsible for the entire body’s immune system. As a result of the bodies incapability to protect the immune system, a Type 1 diabetes patient should rely on insulin medications in order to maintain a healthy body. In most of the cases people with first degree relatives with Type 1 diabetes have a higher risk to suffer from this specific type and are advised to screen at regular intervals.

Type 2 diabetes is the non-insulin dependent diabetes, in which the patient’s body does produce insulin but at a relatively low level which is deemed insufficient by the body. In fact, in a lot of patients with Type 2 diabetes the pancreas may produce more insulin than normal and the body resists the excess production. In most of the Type 2 diabetes patients, the body acts insensitive to changes in the levels of insulin. However, it has often been seen that patients with Type2 diabetes suffer from declining level of the beta cell and their condition worsens over time forcing them to use insulin to control the level of glucose in their bodies.

Symptoms

Most of the diabetes patients suffer from increased blood sugar levels in the initial phases and are forced to constantly urinate. This makes the patient more dehydrated. The body becomes incapable of using fat, carbohydrates and other proteins for metabolism. People who suffer from decreasing levels of insulin may lose a significant amount of weight in a relatively short period of time. Patients who are unaware of their condition may also suffer from vomiting, nausea and fatigue. Apart from this patients with diabetes may also suffer from infections in their skin, and bladder. In certain cases, the patients also complain of blurred vision which may lead to coma and lethargy.

Tips and comments

If you think you are having any one of the various symptoms associated with diabetes, then you should contact a doctor as soon as possible. People who have first degree relatives suffering from Type 1 diabetes are more prone to developing it later in their lives as well. Therefore, they should constantly go for screenings to control their blood glucose levels. Although, diabetes is not a deadly disease, but you should try to keep it in control as much as possible.
