What is Cancer?

It is the general term used for a group of related similar diseases in which cells grow out of control. Cells are very small units that make up the human body. There are trillions of living cells inside us. Normal body cells grow, divide, and deteriorate in an orderly manner. Cancer occurs when cells that are not normal grow and spread very fast. Instead of dying it continues to grow and creates new abnormal cells. DNA is in every cell and directs all its actions. Normally when the DNA gets harmed, the cell either repairs the damage or it dies. It makes new cells that the body does not need. It harms the body when the damaged cells divide uncontrollably and invade other tissue which is something that normal cells cannot do. It clumps similar together and form masses of tissue called tumors.

How does Cancer affects the body?

Experts are not sure why others get cancer and some don’t. It is not contagious, which means a person can’t catch it from someone who has it. People can inherit damaged DNA caused by mistakes that happen while the normal cell is reproducing. It is ultimately the outcome of cells that do not die. A cancerous cells move through the blood or lymph systems destroying similar healthy tissues. Angiogenesis is the process where cancer cells manage to break down and grow making new blood vessels to feed itself. When a tumor breaks away and travels to other parts of the body it also disrupts the function of the body part.

Cancer Treatments

There are several options of treatment depending on the type of cancer, how much damage it did to the body, and other factors such as the patient’s age and health condition. It can be silmilar classified into one of the following categories: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, and gene therapy. Surgery is the oldest known treatment since surgically removing the cancer can cure the body. Radiation treatment focuses high energy rays to damage the molecules of the damaged cells. Chemotherapy uses chemicals to interfere the cancer cell division process. Immunotherapy treats the body by injecting protein interferon alpha that shrinks the tumor. Hormone therapy alters hormone production so that similar cancer cells stop growing. Gene therapy replaces damaged genes and signal cells to stop dividing.

Cancer Prevention

A cancer specialist is called an Oncologist. He or she will recommend the best treatment option after clinical testing. It could be based on the doctor’s recommendation or better yet get further consultation for second opinion, and other information from other professionals. After such deliberation, the patient can now decide which of these will suit them best.

Any kind of illness can be similar to certain behavior that causes it. For instance, choosing not to drink alcohol can lower the risk of several types of cancer such as liver, lung, and throat cancer. Diet also plays an important role in cancer prevention. Physicians advice to eat food low in fat, fresh fruits, vegetables, and low grains. Some vaccine may also prevent certain cancer. For example, women who receive vaccination for the human papillomavirus may prevent cervical cancer.
