Introduction

Many people love to take care our nature. They enjoy planting different plants, taking care of them and seeing them growing healthy and thriving. But such problems occur when they fail to water them or in any instances that would lead the flourished plants into withered.

History

There are several types of diseases that really infect or ruin the plants. One of these is helminthosporium which is commonly called as leaf spot. Fungus Bipolaris is the cause of helminthosporium disease which begins with as leaf spots and later affects the crown and the roots of the plants. It collapses the cells at the base of the culms and results into breaking of the stems and into the whole infected area of the plant. Helminthosporium is a fungal infection, allergen and a toxin that creates large spores which will bring hazardous effects to plants such as leaf spot, melting out, root rot and net blotch. Soggy, dark, sunken areas of rot on the upper part of the plant are the charaterisitcs of the infected plants caused by helminthosporium.

Helminthosporium occurs during spring and fall seasons and affects the growth of plants. This infection is highly attacking the incorrectly planted, wounded and overwatered plants. When the infected plants attacked by helminthosporium become worst, the plants turn into light brown, dry out and wither. This is also extremely treacherous to human’s health, especially when a person is exposed to this fungus and probably this would store in the upper respiratory tract which will ultimately result to an asthma and other respiratory problems. Sometimes it would also damage liver and lungs.

Features

Helminthosporium can be avoided, prevented and treated as well. To avoid this helminthosporium, apply 15-0-15 fertilizer at a rate of six pounds per 1,000 square feet. Do not use fetilizers with high nitrogen. Watering the plants deeply atleast twice a week early in the morning or late afternoon will also help in preventing this fungal infection. During warm and wet weather, refrain from using nitrogen-rich fertilizers, cultivate the soil properly and mow the plants atleast once a week but do not cut it shorter than 2 inches.

Always make sure that your mower is clean and not infected by diseased plants. Check on the flow of the water in your drainage especially when it rains to avoid over-watered of the plants. Remove the plants infected by helminthosporium from the other plants so that others will not be infected too. When you indentify this helminthosporium disease, just apply the fungicides to treat it. Use the sprayer containing a fungicide and spray the affected area and water your plants after a day. If the fungicide is not working well, do the spraying again after a week.

Helminthosporium is also treated with benomyl, thiabendazole or a formulated mixture of thiabendazole and imazalil. The treatment will be done yearly for 4 years.

Tips and comments

Following these such preventions and treatment will help you overcome your problem about the helminthosporium infection of the plants. Just bear in your mind that the fungicide would possibly destroy the life of other plants. Follow the instructions in applying the fungicide so that you can avoid killing of other plants. Do not over-use fungicide.

Proper preventions and treatment can avoid helminthosporium disease. Soil darainage, special mowing techniques, stems and stalks control, careful selection disease-resisting cultivars and aeration are great treatment to cure helminthosporium.Love and treat well your plants!
