Introduction

The Arc is a community based organization, situated in the United States of America, which aims to protect the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization was designed to originally help and provide assistance to people and families of individuals with intellectual and development disabilities. The main target of the organization is to help people identify ways to survive with intellectual and development disabilities and to protect their human rights. The organization deals with all sorts of intellectual and development disabilities such as Autism, Down syndrome, Fragile X and many others. They openly welcome people from all sorts of places. The primary focus of the organization is to help people with disabilities to find ways and attributes about themselves, which enable them to take control of their own lives without taking external help from others. The organization, informally known as thearc, is run by a group of board of directors which take control of the main decision making with a functional working staff as well.

History

Thearc was founded in 1950 by some concerning parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, along with the help of some other local citizens. The Arc has been significantly known for changing people’s level of sensitivity towards children with disabilities of intellectuality and developmental disorders. Having so many members, in thousands, from states all around the country, the organization has a large support group. As the awareness is increasing regarding people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the support group keeps on rapidly increasing. Strong emphasis is placed upon protecting the rights of the people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Features

Thearc has a variety of ways, through which, it gets its message across to educate the general public about the people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. One of the programs at the organization is called the Chapter program. The chapter program includes various conferences and seminars which take place around the country with an active participation of people with intellectual and development disabilities. These conferences and seminars send out clear information to the general public so they are properly educated about relevant disabilities. Thearc also has the national initiative program. This program consists of government grants awarded to medical practices around the country to further study intellectual and developmental disabilities i.e. Autism. This contributes further to discover depths of the disabilities and to find a way to control the relevant disability and to help educate people better in near future. The organization also offers many support services to individuals with intellectual or development disabilities and to their families. These services include finding employments or early group therapy sessions, all to understand the disabilities better and to find options to deal with them. Thearc also offers resources for people to deal with their disability, in the form of guidance notes or tool kits.
