Introduction

Different metabolic bone diseases are referred by a collective term “Metabolic Bone Diseases”. The different bone disorders under this term are caused by abnormalities of Vitamin D3 and other minerals such as, calcium and phosphorus in our body. The imbalance in these minerals and vitamin occur due to their either too much or too little presence in our body.

Calcium deficiency one of the common reasons of metabolic bone diseases. Metabolic bone diseases mostly occur due to too little calcium and too much of phosphorus accompanied too much or too little Vitamin D3 in our body. Other instigating factors for metabolic bone diseases are too little protein, less amount of exposure to sun’s ultraviolet ray (UV B).

In some rare instances, metabolic bone diseases are caused by the disease of organ dysfunction like, kidney, liver, thyroid glands, small intestine.

Conditions of Metabolic Bone Diseases
Osteoporosis
Osteitis Fibrosa Cystic
Osteomalacia (Adults) & Rickets (Children)
Paget's disease of bone

History

Osteoporosis is one of the common metabolic bone diseases of the bones, it is a condition when the “bone mineral density” is reduced, micro architecture of the bone deteriorates, proteins in the body are in an imbalanced state and as a combined effect of these three factors the bones of our body become fragile and more susceptible to fracture.

Treatments: Osteoporosis can be reduced by the changes in life style or medication or with both. Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones, it is a condition when the “bone mineral density” is reduced, micro architecture of the bone deteriorates, proteins in the body are in an imbalanced state and as a combined effect of these three factors the bones of our body become fragile and more susceptible to fracture. Life style changes include preventing the risks of falls, proper diets and exercises. Oral medications include Calcium and Vitamin D supplements, bisphosphonates with few others. Osteoporosis has no specific earlier symptom. The people with this disorder have a higher risk of bone fracture than a normal person.

Features

Osteitis Fibrosa Cystic or OFC is another disorder is the result of an overactive parathyroid glands or unchecked hyperthyroidism. The situation results excess production of PTH or Parathyroid Hormones which releases the calcium from our bones and elevates the level of calcium in our blood through kidney. The bones become weaker because their calcified supported structures are replaced by Fibrous tissue.

Treatments: Generally Vitamin D treatment is give intravenously with Calcitriol or Alfacalcidol. Studies have been shown that OFC occur at the end stage of Hyperthyroidism.
OFC can also be treated surgically by removing the whole parathyroid glands. Bone transplantation is another recent treatment method.

Osteomalacia is a disorder that associates with the softening of the bones imbalance mineralization in the bones. Osteomalacia in the children is known as rickets.

Treatments: The most common cause of this disease is deficiency of Vitamin which can be obtained from diet and exposure to sunlight

Tips and comments

Paget's disease of bone: This is one type of chronic disorder among other metabolic bone diseases, where excessive breakdown makes the bones weaker and deformed, often results in pain, arthritis mostly on the bone joints.

Treatments: There is no proper cure for this disorder, treatments can lessen the pain and may help to control the disorder.
