Smoking has been around for a long time and was thought to first be done only by men. Most people know that cigarettes are bad from you and that you can get different diseases from smoking. Even though people understand this, they still do smoke. Some people may not understand the different diseases that you can get besides cancer can include: chronic bronchitis, emphysema, COPD and asthma in older people. There is also a lot of controversy over what second hand smoke can do to other people and children. Smoking can also cause blood pressure issues. It can also cause premature birth in babies and a low birth weight. Once a person gets hooked it is very hard to stop. Most people understand that smoking can cause them to get cancer and maybe even die, but are too week to stop smoking.


Smoking has been around since the ancient times, right around 5000 B.C. People not only smoked tobacco, but they also smoked hallucinogenic drugs. At first smoking was used more as a social tool. It is also known that more men smoked than women and that most smoking was done in a pipe. Smoking in a peace pipe was done by the Indians of different tribes and with the early settlers. A link was shown in the 1950s that tied smoking to lung cancer, which is just one of the diseases from smoking you can get. Four years later, it was first published that smoking could cause lung cancer. In the United States there are about 500,000 deaths each year that are related to smoking. Smoking one cigarette a day puts you at a higher risk of getting heart disease and diseases from smoking


Most of the diseases from  smoking involve the heart and the lungs. You can also start to have problems with your stomach and smokers have a higher risk of getting Crohn’s disease and pancreatic cancer. Smoking has also been associated with oral cancer and throat cancer. You will also get more wrinkles, especially around your mouth. With the issues that come from smoking, there is also the rise in health cost, especially in older smokers. People who smoke and are older will find themselves in the hospital for a variety of reasons. Even a simple cold can turn into pneumonia and an extended hospital stay. People who smoke also find themselves getting short of breath more than a non-smoker.

Tips and comments

Knowing the diseases from smoking that you can get should give you some incentive to quit. There are many different ways to stop smoking. One way that you can quit is cold turkey. If you fall off the wagon and have a cigarette, just remember that you are stopping it to help your health. You can also talk to your doctor about getting on the patch. If you have some will power, this may work for you. Another way that you can stop is get pills from your doctor that will help with your moods. Some people are afraid of gaining weight when they try to quit smoking. If you are afraid of gaining weight, then go for a walk whenever you get the urge to smoke. Remember, you did not pick the habit up over night and will not get rid of it over night.
