Introduction

When choosing the right clothing to wear to a wedding, there are a lot of important elements to consider.

Searching for Clues

Once you've received the invite to your friends wedding, it can be difficult deciding what clothing you're going to wear. Most wedding have a theme of some sort, and can vary great. So how do you know what etiquette the wedding might be following, how will your clothing choice fit into that theme? It may take a bit of detective work, but there are clues to be found.

First of all, take a look at the invitation. It might say right on the invitation what you should wear, but if it doesn't, check what style the invitation is written in. Is the invite a fancy one? Is it on cream colored paper with gold embroidery, or similar to that? If it is, it's safe to assume that the wedding is black tie, and that you should dress fancy. If the invitation isn't fancy at all, it's safe to assume the opposite. The invitation is often a good indicator of what to expect at the wedding.

When choosing what clothing to wear, consider the location of the wedding. If the wedding is taking place outside, don't pick a dress that will blow up in the wind. Think about your shoes as well. If the wedding is outside, you don't want to be wearing a pair of high heels that are likely to sink into the ground. If the location is going to be well-heated, avoid anything (like a suit or suit dress) that might cause you to overheat. If the wedding is taking place in a fancy location, choose something dressy.

Clothing Ideas

When looking for the right clothing to wear to a wedding, the very first thing you'll want to consider is color. What color are you going to wear? How well does it fit the theme of the wedding?

If you're going to a daytime wedding, consider choosing a fun, springtime dress. A sweater and a skirt set might do the trick as well, depending on the time of year. Consider wearing a nice looking hat, or a light colored suit. Avoid any kind of a dark colored suit when going to a wedding, it tends to look to "office" associated.

For a nighttime wedding, a cocktail dress or suit works nicely. Black works just fine for a nighttime occasion. Also, plan on wearing dark colors, and avoid wearing anything that has sequins to a black tie wedding. If the invitation specifically says black tie, choose an especially formal dress, usually something that touches the floor. Wear formal jewelry. Also, expect that you'll be dancing. With that in mind, be sure to wear a dress that you can move fairly easily in.

Consider the wearability of the clothing. If you're buying clothing specifically for the wedding, try and choose something that you might feel comfortable wearing on more then one occasion.
