Introduction

How To Find Jobs in Fashion Design

Both men and women have been interested in fashion for quite some time now. In fact, ancient Egyptian women constantly wore wigs while the men wore kilts. Today all you have to do is look around and you will find hairstyles and clothes that the fashion industry has designed. Since fashion doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon, you may be interested in fashion jobs. There are some things that you need to know in order to be able to get your foot in the door though.

Step 1

Decide what type of fashion jobs you are truly interested in. There are several different fashion jobs available – everything from designing clothes to marketing them. Every one of these fashion jobs has its own responsibilities that come along with it. Once you know what you want to do, you should start taking classes in that area. For instance, if you want to be a designer, you should take college courses in fashion design. On the other hand, if you are interested in fashion marketing, you should go to college to major in marketing.

Step 2

Even after you have taken fashion classes, you will still want to read up on the fashion industry and the designers who work therein. Take the time to explore what makes some companies more successful than others. While you have already learned the ins and outs of fashion jobs through your formal education, now is the time to begin dissecting every angle of the industry, paying particular attention to why certain things are more popular than others.

Step 3

Start applying for internships. These are available to college students within all sizes of fashion companies. You probably won’t be paid for these fashion jobs but you will gain valuable contacts that you can use after you graduate. This is also a great time to get your questions answered, your enthusiasm seen and names added to your contact book.

Step 4

After graduation you should follow up with your contacts. Tell these folks that you have just graduated and you are now seeking fashion jobs. Keep the conversation light. Ask for advice on what fashion jobs you should look for and what companies are hiring now. This will give you some valuable information that you didn’t have before, if it doesn’t open up a job opportunity for you.

Step 5

Search for any fashion jobs that are available within the companies that you are actually interested in working for. Most companies have web sites today. These web sites will provide you with information about any employment opportunities that they may currently have available. Look for any openings that coincide with the experience and expertise that you have. Make sure that you include this information on your resume too. Herein is where you will also want to list any jobs or internships that you have already held within the fashion industry. You will also want to list any degrees or credits that you have learned that relate to the fashion industry. Make sure that you include any contacts that you have within the fashion industry as your references.
