The Fashion Institute of Technology is one of the top five fashion schools in the world. Its main focus is art and design education. It has a current enrollment of 10,166 students. Options in the Undergraduate degrees include Marketing for the Fashion Industries, Toy Design, Menswear, Fashion Merchandising, and Computer Animation and Interactive Media. Its reputation is impeccable being ranked so high in the fashion schools of the world. The Fashion Institute of Technology has many famous alumni like Leslie Blodgett, president and CEO of the Bare Escentuals makeup line; Fran Boller, apparel director of Nike’s Jordan brand; and Edward Menicheschi, vice president and publisher of Vanity Fair.

History

The Fashion Institute of Technology was opened in 1944 with 100 students; it was located on the two top floors of the High School of Needle Trades. Soon, patrons wanted to bring greater esteem to the industry by having the institute become a college with degree awarding status. It became accredited in 1957, and it soon moved to a proper campus. Today, the campus sprawls over an entire city block, and has more than 10,000 students. The college offers degree programs in various subjects, like Menswear and Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing, which are exclusive to the college, and Fashion Merchandising Management, Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design, and Toy Design, which the college was the first to offer in the country.

The Fashion Institute of technology has earned many accolades and has gotten a lot of recognition. It has earned numerous awards. It has won the National Council for Marketing and Publications (NCMPR) award 11 times for different categories and the latest was won in the year 2009. It has also won several Admissions Reports awards for magazines and billboards and best class schedules amongst others. It has also won several CASE national awards and the awards for Creativity Magazine. It has also been conferred awards by the University and College Designers Associations. Calvin Klein a noted alumnus of the school recently gave the school a $2 million gift for its spring runway show. It has been given favorable rating by websites which help students gather information and help them make a decision over which college they would like to attend. The school has access to and has associations with designers and industry professionals who evaluate student work and offer workshops, and the museum has one of the most extensive fashion archives anywhere.
