Introduction

Getting car tags & insurance is a necessary part of vehicle ownership. In all states you will need both car tags & insurance in order to legally operate your vehicle on the roads. Getting tags & insurance is not usually a difficult process. It will however cost you money for both the tags & insurance. Your insurance will have to be paid monthly or semi-annually in order to keep it up to date, Registration is generally good for one or two years, depending on where you live.

Step 1

  • Find out your state's regulations for insurance. You will have the option of getting your state's minimum or you may decide you want full coverage. If you get the minimum it will cover damage that you do to another vehicle or property, however, it will not cover damage to your own vehicle. If you financed your car and owe on the loan, you will usually be required to have full coverage on the vehicle. This will cost more but it will protect your vehicle. If you can afford to have full coverage, it is a good idea if your vehicle is fairly new and in good condition. For an older vehicle, it may not be worth paying the premiums for full coverage.

Step 2

  • Obtain insurance quotes by calling local agents or inquiring online. Once you find a quote that fits your needs and requirements you can sign up with the agent and pay for your insurance. You will usually have the option to pay monthly or to pay for a six month period at one time. You will get a proof of insurance card. You will have to take this card with you when you to to your local Division of Motor Vehicles. Insurance is the first stop to getting tags & insurance.

Step 3

  • Take your bill of sale & insurance card with you to the DMV. You can also usually print out the registration form from home and take it with you. Filling out the form at home can save you time when you are at athe DMV. Find the line for new registrations and stand in it until your turn.

Step 4

  • Hand over all of your paperwork & insurance card. The clerk will tell you how much money you owe to register your vehicle. Once you pay, you will your new tags.

Step 5

  • Attach your new tags to your vehicle & insurance card in the glove box. It is important to keep your proof of insurance card in your vehicle. If you are ever stopped for whatever reason, you will most likely be asked for your registration & insurance card.

Tips

Purchasing your auto insurance and homeowners insurance through the same company can often qualify you for a discount.

There are several ways to obtain discounts on insurance, be sure to ask your agent if you qualify for any.

If you currently have tags on another vehicle, you may be able to transfer the plates to your new vehicle, rather than getting new ones. Check with your local DMV to find out about this.
