Hip Surgery Risks

Introduction

As with any surgery, hip surgery also carries risks and complications. The hip is one of the main weight-bearing joints in our body. It contains two parts: the femoral head and the acetabulum. Ligaments connect the ball to the socket and problems are usually from osteoarthritis. Depending on factors that include age, weight, joint function, and activity people find their hip joints wearing out over time. This is when bone starts to rub together and it causes a big issue for people and it becomes debilitating. Not being able to use your hip or being in constant pain is not fun. Having pain in the weight-bearing joints can be very depressing for some people.

History

If on the advice of your doctor you have decided that a hip replacement is right for you, there are some complications that you should be made aware of. One of the hip surgery risks is getting blood clots. This is from the immobility that you will be going through. Because you will not be moving much, your blood could have an issue moving through the veins in your legs right. One thing that can help with this is compression stockings. This makes the blood in the legs flow more freely. Another complication that you can get from hip surgery is infection. This does not happen very often and can be treated with antibiotics.

Features

Other hip surgery complications include: dislocation of the hip if you move it more than 90 degrees and loosening of the hip joint. Over time, the screws can loosen and this requires surgery to fix. Another complication is breakage of the hip replacement. Though rare, it has been known to happen and it will require another hip replacement surgery. Also, the leg that had the hip replacement done may become longer than the other leg. This can sometimes be fixed with a lift put into your shoe on the leg that did not have the surgery. If it is not taken care of, you will end up having pain in both hips and your lower back as it will throw the body off balance. You can also get joint stiffening if you do not work the hip enough. Following your doctor’s advice and doing physical therapy after surgery will help you recover faster and be able to use the hip quicker.

Conclusion

Hip surgery has come a long way. However, with all of the strides being made, there can still be complications. The best thing that you can do is listen to the advice that your doctor gives you and follow it as closely as possible. Your recovery time is up to you.
