Introduction

Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, often referred to more simply as Fort Lauderdale Airport, is one of south Florida's biggest along with Miami International Airport and Palm Beach International Airport. This airport hosts thousands of travelers on a daily basis who travel to south Florida either to go to Miami and enjoy the beaches, take a cruise, or perhaps head down to the Florida Keys for various festivities. In addition, many people fly through Fort Lauderdale Airport for sporting events. Not only is there a NASCAR stadium located in Homestead, but also the area has the Florida Panthers, Miami Marlins, Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, and Miami Hurricanes. Navigating Fort Lauderdale Airport, not only getting there but also navigating through it, can be a challenge, particularly for people who are not originally from the south Florida area. This article will help all potential travelers to navigate to or through Fort Lauderdale airport in order to make the most of their journey to everyone's favorite travel destination: sunny south Florida.

Step 1

When navigating to Fort Lauderdale Airport, always be aware of the traffic conditions on the highways that you will take to get there. For instance, there is currently an extensive construction project on Interstate 595 that is projected to last for several years and cause various headaches and delays for people driving all over Broward County, especially people driving to Fort Lauderdale Airport. In addition, Interstate 95 in either direction also tends to get backed up frequently, which could cause delays when navigating to Fort Lauderdale Airport. Watch the news, listen to the radio, or get on the Internet in order to find out the latest traffic updates for the highways leading you to Fort Lauderdale Airport.

Step 2

Once you are at Fort Lauderdale Airport, you will want to navigate through the various areas of the airport. There is a large parking garage which offers parking for both short term and long term passengers. This parking garage also offers a tram that can carry passengers to the various terminals. There are four terminals at Fort Lauderdale Airport. These terminals allow passengers to fly with a wide variety of airlines including Delta, Southwest, Spirit, American, Continental, AirTran, JetBlue, Allegiant, Frontier, Air Canada, West Jet, US Air, Avianca, Air Sunshine, Sky Bahamas, Virgin America, and Bahamas Air, among others. As you can see, Fort Lauderdale Airport offers travelers a lot of variety in their airline choices. When navigating through the airport, there are signs located throughout the area that indicate which terminals host which airlines. When in doubt, you can always ask a friendly airport worker or one of the many Broward Sheriff's Office deputies that also patrol the airport frequently.

Step 3

There are many things for passengers to do to pass the time at Fort Lauderdale Airport. Many of these things can also be done by people waiting to pick up friends, loved ones, or other passengers, but others they must wait for since some things are located by the gates, for which access is restricted to ticketed passengers only. Things that all visitors to Fort Lauderdale Airport can enjoy include listening to music (the airport plays music on the loudspeakers and also occasionally hosts live performances inside the terminals), dining (there are several restaurants and bars inside the airport, including a Chili's which has a great view of the runway and even serves breakfast), watching planes take off and land from Lauderdale Airport frequently, touring the duty free shops, and shopping the regular newstands.

Tips

Always be sure to check on your flight times before you leave for Fort Lauderdale Airport. You never know when you might encounter a delay. Of course, even if there are no delays, make sure you leave with plenty of time.

Another thing to keep in mind when navigating Fort Lauderdale Airport is to look around you. There are plenty of signs and friendly people that can help you navigate through this very busy airport. When in doubt, just ask.
