Introduction

When it comes to beautiful, relaxing white sand beaches, the coast of South Carolina can't be beat. From one end of the coast to the other, South Carolina offers a great variety for any type of traveler. Whether you are looking for a fun family vacation or a romantic couples getaway, there is a beach for everyone in the Palmetto State. Let's take a look at what three of those beautiful white sand beaches have to offer: Folly Beach, Myrtle Beach and Edisto Beach.

Myrtle Beach

When one tries to choose the best white sand beach in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach may be one of the first destinations that comes to mind. It is often picked as a top beach trip destination by countless publications and anyone who has been there can tell you why. Not only is there 60 miles of white sand beach to enjoy, but there are hundreds of things to do and see in the area. There are several shops, restaurants, nightclubs golf courses, water slides, entertainment complexes and much more. It's great for all ages.

Because there is so much beach and ocean area, tourists who visit Myrtle Beach like to take advantage of activities such as deep sea fishing and water sports like surfing and scuba diving. Boating, kayaking, para-sailing and windsurfing on the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean are other reasons why Myrtle Beach is so popular.

Edisto Beach

If lots of shops and an exciting nightlight is not exactly what you have in mind when visiting the great white sandy beaches in South Carolina, you may want to check out Edisto Beach. Whereas many of the other beaches in South Carolina are home to large resorts, Edisto Beach has more of a down-home type of atmosphere. It is also surrounded by Edisto Beach State Park, a large 1,255 acre park that includes marshes, rivers, some beachfront areas and a beautiful forest. Those who enjoy the outdoors can stay in rustic cabins or pick out a beach-side camping spot.

Edisto Beach is a popular white sand beach because it has not been disturbed as much as some of the other beaches on the coast. Visitors to the area enjoy the pristine white sand, wildlife and natural sights and sounds.

Folly Beach

While there is always something going on at Myrtle Beach and Edisto Beach is all about natural beauty, Folly Beach is the white sand beach that people visit when they want something somewhere in the middle. Located just a few miles south of Charleston, Folly Beach features over seven miles of white sand beach along a barrier reef. While the Charleston area has many fun things to do, Folly Beach offers its own activities.

Those who enjoy the beach and the ocean will enjoy collecting shells or playing in the surf. If you enjoy fishing, there is a long fishing pier; it is also great for taking in beautiful views. There is an old lighthouse on Folly Beach and tourists enjoy walking to it to take pictures. History buffs will also love Folly Beach because of the role it played in the Civil War. There are many historic landmarks in the area. The State of South Carolina considers Folly Beach to be one of the last old-time beaches in the country and because of this, locals often call it the "edge of America."
