Introduction

Tom Cruise is best known as an actor, though he has also produced movies. He is the winner of three Golden Globe Awards and a nominee for three Academy Awards, he is a much-loved and popular actor. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he is extremely good-looking. Tom Cruise first acted in a major movie in 1981, and he has come a long way since. Here is a list of the top five Tom Cruise movies of all time.

  • Top Gun (1986): This is an action drama film that was inspired by an article of the same name published in the California magazine. Cruise played the role of a young naval aviator, Lieutenant Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who is rather reckless, but admired nevertheless. The story evolves to bring in a romantic angle, and also has elements of loyalty and friendship. Because of certain events, Maverick loses his aggressiveness and charisma, and considers leaving the navy... The flying scenes are great, and all the actors perform brilliantly. The soundtrack of the movie also enjoyed great commercial success, making it to the top of the Billboards.
  • Mission: Impossible Series: This is a series of films based on a television series that went by the same name. Tom Cruise features as Ethan Hunt, an agent for the Impossible Missions Force. In the first movie of the series, Hunt is framed for the murder of his colleagues, and is also accused of selling secret government documents to enemies. In the second movie, the plot revolves around a madman's scheme of stealing a lethal virus and selling it to the highest bidder to cause havoc with it as he likes. The third movie shows Hunt as having retired from the force, but getting back into action to face ruthless criminals who have in their possession a very deadly object known as The Rabbit's Foot. The Fourth movie features Hunt and some others as being accused of bombing the Kremlin.
  • The Last Samurai (2003): This is an epic drama film set some time in the 1870s. Tom Cruise plays the part of Captain Nathan Algren, who is requested to perform a special mission - that of wiping out the Ancient Imperial Samurai Warriors. He is, however, traumatized by the experiences he had in the Indian Wars, where he pretty much massacred Indians. The fight scenes as well as the acting are very impressive.
  • A Few Good Men (1992): This is a drama film that features Tom Cruise as "Daniel Danny" Kaffee, an inexperienced Judge Advocate General's Corps lawyer. He leads the defence in the court-martial of two U.S. marines who have been accused of murdering a fellow marine at the Guntanamo Bay Naval Base. The plot develops to show how Kaffee grows and matures as a lawyer. Honor is at the heart of this story, and how people have different perspectives on it.
  • Vanilla Sky (2001): This is thriller in the science-fiction genre, and is an English remake of a Spanish movie. This is a strange, sweet movie, where many concepts - love, reality, soul, mystery are blended together harmoniously. After an accident with a jealous ex-lover, Tom Cruise, who plays the role of a wealthy man by the name of David Aames, finds himself in a strange world, and it is not clear whether he is awake or sleeping.
