History Of the Princess Cruise Line

Remember the Love Boat? That’s all part of Princess Cruise Line history. From the 1960’s forward, the Princess Cruise Line has been offering passengers a cruise experience to remember. Modernization is a key factor in their continued success in the cruise industry.

History Overview

History Of the Princess Cruise Line

Since it’s beginning in 1965 Princess Cruise Line has been one of the names best known to the cruise industry. Princess Cruise Line started out with its first and only ship which was chartered in 1965 with the name of Princess Patricia. She was an older ship and really not meant for sailing the tropical seas, so the cruise line put an end to that charter and set sail with their own ship named Princess Italia. Princess Italia remained in service with the cruise line from 1967 until 1973 and has been sailing with Louis Cruise Lines since 2002. Princess Italia is now known as Sapphire.

The stardom of Princess Cruise Line took a huge growth with the filming of the popular TV series “The Love Boat” that was most often filmed aboard the Pacific Princess who serviced the cruise line from 1975 until 2002. The Love Boat aired from 1977 until 1986 and also featured other ships from the Princess Cruise Line Fleet with the Pacific Princess being the main setting for most of shows in the popular TV series.

With constant innovation from Princess Cruise Line beginning from the first day until now, they have set an example for most of the cruise industry and are now the 3rd largest cruise line in the world. From one old small ship that sailed in 1965 to a fleet of 16 ships on the seas today, the growth experienced by Princess Cruise Line is undeniable. In 2013, Princess Cruise Line will be adding another ship to their fleet.

Princess Cruise Line Today

History Of the Princess Cruise Line

Not all ships in the Princess Cruise Line fleet are enormous in size. For a more traditional and intimate experience, they offer 2 smaller ships with passenger capacities between 600 and 700. The smaller ships in the fleet may be small but they aren’t lacking modern amenities.

From the 1965 cruise to Mexico on the small old chartered ship to an entire fleet that visits 100’s of ports in various areas of the world, Princess Cruise Line started small and unknown but is now amongst the bigger names in the cruise industry.

Today, Princess Cruise Line offers:

  • Modern amenities
  • Great entertainment
  • Programs for youth
  • Spa experiences
  • Casinos
  • Fine dining
  • Art auctions
  • Book club
  • Poolside activities
  • Bars
  • Lounges

When you see the amenities offered today versus the 1960’s it is truly amazing how modernization has come into play throughout the entire cruise industry. Ships use to be simply a mode of transportation to and from certain destinations and today; the ship itself has become the actual destination for passengers.

From travel to destination, isn’t that what vacations are really about? Transitions for Princess Cruise Line have been constant and consistent which is why they have achieved the rank in the cruise industry they have today. It’s almost like a “rags to riches” story with a twist of what everyone wants to experience, all balled into one big adventure while awaiting that next passenger to board.
