Introduction

Lowing electricity prices in your home is extremely easy. Although you will not be able to bring your bill to a zero, you do have some control on how much electricity you use.

Step 1

The first thing to check when lowering your electricity prices is your water heater. Check to see if it is well insulated. Touch the outside and if it is warm you are wasting electricity. Go to your local hardware store to purchase some insulation. This should save you about 10 percent on your bill on a $30 investment.

Step 2

Unplugging your appliances can lower your electricity prices and save you about a $1 a day. Most have digital devices that run even if you are not using them. To keep it simple, use a power cord that will allow you turn all the appliances off at you time.

Step 3

Buy a programmable thermostat help with electricity prices and have the air conditioner turned up when you are not home and turned down about a half hour before you come back home. This way you will not be cooling a home when no you is home. A programmer should cost around $40.

Step 4

Purchase a space heater for the winter and heat only the areas you need to help electricity prices. This should save you around $45 a month.

Step 5

Don't use hot water to wash all of your clothes when considering electricity prices. Use cold water when possible and save the hot water for whites. Over 90 percent of your washing machine energy comes from the hot water heater.

Step 6

Electricity prices are lower when you turn your dishwashers hot dryer off. Then open the door and allow your dishes to air dry. This will also save you money in the summer since you will not be heating up your kitchen from the heat of the dishwasher.

Step 7

Also pay attention to your laundry dryer when accessing electricity prices. Your dryer will hold double that of your washing machine. You could hand your clothes out instead of using a dryer and save even more.

Step 8

Be sure and change your air conditioners air filter once every month to help lower electricity prices. Your AC will run better and use less electricity. As a reminder change it when you pay your monthly bills which includes electricity prices.

Tips

A little known way to keep electricity prices down is to keep your refrigerator and freezer as full as possible. The food will act as insulation and the refrigerator and freezer will not have to run as often. If you are not able to keep it full with food just fill up some empty milk container with water to help with electricity prices.

Choose a low-cost electric company. The deregulation of electric companies allows independent companies to complete with the bigger electric companies. Currently the states that allow this are Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas. Be careful when choosing a new company. Be sure to read the fine print. Some have fines if you cancel early and others are not less expensive.
